Women Take Part

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) suggested that it will take up to 200 years to achieve equal numbers of women in Parliament!!

While this is a shocking statistic, it is clear that there just aren't enough women in most areas of public life. For certain groups of women, including Black, Asian and minority ethnic women, their representation is even lower. The EOC is clear that the power gap needs to be closed, with representation for all groups of women.

Women Take Part* will investigate models and good practice that currently exist that can better encourage, equip and support women from under-represented groups, particularly Black, Asian and minority ethnic women, to become more active in governance systems and structures, and determine which are the most effective approaches likely to have a long term impact.

Women Take Part acknowledges that there are, of course, two sides to the story. Whatever journey women might take, they are likely to want and need particular learning, support, and encouragement along the way.

However, while we can work on decreasing some of the more personal and practical barriers to involvement, we still have to convince organisations to address inbuilt inequalities if we are to make progress and substantially increase the involvement of women in governance and decision making in this country.

Changesuk are conducting a survey as part of a wider piece of research called Women Take Part - we ask what are the 6 key changes or actions needed for women to become more influential and involved in the public domain.
